Selling an Older Amazon Seller Account With Ungated or Hazmat Approvals

The Short Answer

If you are leaving Amazon with an older seller account that still holds ungated categories, brand approvals or hazmat access, yes, you can sell it. The approvals that show on the account count toward the offer, alongside its age, history and health. We open the account together and look at how old it is, the categories you can sell in, account health, what brand approvals you have, and whether you have Brand Registry or other special features.

What do ungated and hazmat approvals mean on a seller account?

An approval is permission Amazon has already given your account to list something that needs it. A gated category or brand asks for approval before you can list; once your account has it, that category is ungated for you. A hazmat approval means the account is in Amazon's program for dangerous goods (hazmat) sold through FBA, Fulfillment by Amazon, where Amazon stores your units and ships the orders.

Amazon's reason: "You need approval to ensure products sold in our store are safe, authentic, and meet regulations."

Amazon's rules for that program are on its FBA dangerous goods (hazmat) program page.

A new account starts at registration, where Amazon asks for "information about your product codes, business certifications, and manufacturer or brand status." An older account can already hold approvals that a new account would have to apply for from scratch.

A brand new account and yours, on approvals. Category approvals: A new account Has to apply from scratch, Your older account Can already be on the record; Brand approvals: A new account Has to apply from scratch, Your older account Counted only if the record shows them; Hazmat program: A new account Not enrolled yet, Your older account Enrolled, if the record shows it

We only count approvals that show on your account.

Thinking of selling? Two-minute form, a 45-minute call, your offer within 24 hours.

How do I check which approvals my account holds?

Search a product in Seller Central and read the status Amazon shows next to it. Sell this product means your account needs no approval for it. Apply to sell means approval is required and your account does not have it yet. Not Available means the product cannot be listed. Write down what you find.

Those three labels come from Amazon's Categories and products that require approval page. Some products need more than one approval: Amazon's example is Nike shoes, which need "Shoes category approval" and "Nike brand approval". Check a few products from each category you used to sell in, and a few from the brands you were approved for.

Here is what is worth listing before you talk to any buyer:

  • Categories. The ones where your products show Sell this product.
  • Brands. Any brand approvals the account was granted.
  • Hazmat. Whether the account is in the dangerous goods program.
  • Brand Registry. Amazon's program for trademark owners to protect their brand. Note it if you have it, and note any USPTO-registered trademark.
  • Age and history. When the account was created, rough lifetime sales, the date of the last sale.

A dormant account can still be sold, and its approvals are counted if they still show.

Do the approvals go with the account when it is sold?

Not as a promise. We value the account on the approvals its record shows on the evaluation call, and you are paid on the transfer call either way. After the handover, Amazon verifies the new owner in their own name, on about half of transfers, and that check can take 30 to 60 days. That wait is the buyer's, not yours.

Amazon's help pages are plain about the account itself: "If the ownership of a business changes for any reason, the new owner must establish a new seller account." Another page says you can add users to a Professional account but you cannot transfer the account.

That is why a sale to us is done as the sale of the business the account belongs to, on a written Asset Purchase Agreement, with the new owner then verified by Amazon in their own name. If you want advice on your own position, talk to a lawyer.

What we look at on the evaluation call

The evaluation call is 45 minutes on a screen share. Approved categories are one of the things that set the number, with age, history, health, Brand Registry and any USPTO-registered trademark.

Before the call, we ask for the basics: account age, category approvals, sales history, metrics (order defect rate, late shipment rate, feedback score) and any brand assets such as USPTO trademarks. No login, no password, no bank details. Nothing sensitive changes hands before a contract is signed.

How much an approval moves your offer is a separate question, and it has its own page: how much is my Amazon seller account worth. The offer itself comes on the call or within 24 hours.

The numbers sellers ask about first
  • 45 min

the evaluation call, on a screen share

  • 24 hours

your offer, when it is not on the call

  • 1,600+

seller accounts we have bought since 2020

The account also has to be in good standing. We do not offer reinstatement as a service.

How the sale runs, start to finish

A sale to us usually closes in one to three weeks. You send a two-minute form, we look at the account on the call, and you get an offer. You sign the Asset Purchase Agreement, the written contract that records the sale. We fund Escrow.com before anything moves, and you are paid on the transfer call.

From the form to being paid. The form - About two minutes, before we ever speak.; The evaluation call - 45 minutes, approvals and all, on a screen share.; Your offer - On the call, or within 24 hours.; Agreement and escrow - You sign the APA. We fund Escrow.com first.; Clear your stock - FBA units down to about 100 or fewer. They stay yours.; Download your records - Reports and tax forms, saved before you hand over.; The transfer call - Within 10 business days of escrow. Escrow.com pays you on it.

Escrow.com is a licensed escrow agent (California DFPI licence 9631867). It holds the purchase price, and you can log in and see the money there before you hand over anything.

Clear your inventory before the transfer, hazmat units included. We buy the account, not the stock, so anything left at Amazon should come down to about 100 units or fewer.

Download your reports and tax forms before you hand over. Tax on the sale is a question for your accountant.

From the transfer call, the money reaches your bank in about 1 business day by US wire, 3 to 5 business days by international wire, or about 3 business days by the free electronic transfer. We cover the Escrow fee either way.

How do I spot a buyer who is not real?

A real buyer signs a written agreement before asking for any login, and puts the money with a licensed escrow agent before access changes hands. Walk away from anyone who wants your credentials first, wants to pay by an informal transfer, or leaves your name and bank details on the account with no plan to remove them.

One seller on Amazon's own forum put the risk this way: "If you fall for one of those online dudes that promise you to buy your account, please realize that your name and bank information will remain on your account and YOU will be responsible for all violations and charges."

What we do about that: your name, tax ID, address and bank information are replaced by the new owner's. While your card is still on the account, any charge that lands on it is ours, and we pay it back by gift card, Zelle or bank transfer. We write to you on the day your details come off.

FAQ

Can I sell an Amazon account with hazmat approval?

Yes, if the account is in good standing and registered to you as its original owner. On the call we check whether the account's record shows the hazmat program.

Is an Amazon account with ungated categories worth more?

That question has its own page: what an account is worth. Bring your list of approvals to the call.

My old account has not sold anything in years. Do its approvals still count?

Bring it to the call. We check which approvals still show on the account and value it from there.

Do I need to apply for anything before I sell?

We value the account as it stands today, and we look at what is there on the call. Before the call we ask for the basics, and the form takes about two minutes.

I want to buy an ungated account, not sell one. Where do I go?

Our sister brand Seller Accounts sells aged accounts to buyers, at selleraccounts.com. Cash For Stores only buys. If you are selling, send us the form.
