Can I Transfer or Sell My eBay Account to Someone Else?

The Short Answer

eBay says no: its help page says you can't sell your eBay account or change its ownership, and its User Agreement bars transferring it to another party without eBay's consent. If you are winding down your eBay store and want to get paid for it rather than hand it to a relative, a shared login is the risky route and a sale on a signed agreement through escrow is the clean one. A sale to us is still a sale eBay's pages forbid, and Cash For Stores buys eBay accounts where there is buyer demand anyway, on a signed Asset Purchase Agreement, and Escrow.com releases the funds on the transfer call, the moment the seller hands over access.

What does eBay say about transferring an account?

From eBay's help page Selling an account and changing ownership, word for word: "In the interest of protecting our buyers and sellers, and maintaining a safe marketplace, you can't sell your eBay account or change its ownership." "Attempting to sell an eBay account may result in buying and selling restrictions as well as account suspension or removal."

And from section 3, "Using eBay", of the eBay User Agreement, you agree not to:

"transfer your eBay account (including feedback) and user ID to another party without our consent"

eBay's help page explains why: feedback is intended to reflect a seller's performance, so eBay doesn't allow accounts to be transferred or sold.

Thinking of selling? Two-minute form, a 45-minute call, your offer within 24 hours.

Does eBay ever give its consent?

eBay's User Agreement bars transferring your account, feedback and user ID to another party "without our consent", so consent is the one opening it leaves. Its help page on selling an account still says you can't sell it or change its ownership. Nothing we quote from eBay says how consent is given, so ask eBay before you count on it.

Your eBay balance. eBay's balance terms describe the balance as a limited-purpose account for your sales proceeds, with disbursements to your Linked Financial Account. Withdraw your eBay balance to your own bank before the handover.

Why not just give someone your login?

eBay's User Agreement says you will not "share your log in credentials with any third parties". If a relative or a helper only needs to run the store for you, eBay's allowed route is Team access, which lets them work on your behalf without your password.

"Using Team access (formerly Multi-user account access), you can share access to your account so that other users can perform tasks on your behalf, without exposing your passwords or private information."

eBay's balance terms say that transactions by a person you gave your passwords or codes to are not unauthorized transactions. Once you hand your login to anyone, what that person does with the account and its money is on you, and eBay's help page warns that selling an account, to a private buyer or to us, can end in suspension. In a sale to us, that risk sits with us as the new owner: you are paid on the transfer call, and any charges that land on your card after the sale are ours to pay back.

Which eBay accounts do we buy?

We buy accounts registered to a single owner, the person or business that opened them. We buy eBay accounts where there is buyer demand for them, so not every eBay store gets an offer. The account must be in good standing, with no current suspension, deactivation or unresolved appeal.

If you have run more than one account, say so on the form. It is not an automatic no. What matters is how the accounts were kept apart, with different information inside each account and different IPs used consistently, and how long this one has been live: it needs to have been live for more than two years.

If you are on the other side of this and want to buy an aged account rather than sell one, that is our sister brand, Seller Accounts (selleraccounts.com). Cash For Stores only buys.

How does a sale of an eBay account to us work?

You fill in a two-minute form, we look at the account with you on a 45-minute evaluation call, and you get a cash offer on the call or within 24 hours. If you accept, you sign the Asset Purchase Agreement and we fund Escrow.com before anything moves.

Escrow is a neutral third party that holds the money until both sides have done their part. We fund Escrow.com before anything moves, so the money is held there before you hand over credentials.

From the form to being paid. The form - About two minutes, before we ever speak.; The evaluation call - 45 minutes on a screen share. We look at the account together.; Your offer - On the call, or within 24 hours.; Agreement and escrow - You sign the APA. Escrow.com is funded before anything moves.; Your records - Download your sales reports and tax forms before the handover.; The transfer call - Booked within 10 business days of escrow being funded.; You are paid - Escrow.com releases the funds on that call, at the handover.
A private buyer and a sale to us, side by side. Login before the money: Private buyer A scam, walk away, Cash For Stores Escrow.com is funded before anything moves; Charges after the handover: Private buyer Yours to deal with, Cash For Stores Ours, paid back to you

A deal usually closes in one to three weeks. From the transfer call, the money reaches your bank in about 1 business day by US wire, 3 to 5 business days by international wire, or about 3 business days by the free electronic transfer. We cover the Escrow fee either way.

What sets the offer is the account's history. We give the number on the call, after we have seen the account.

If you are ready, send us the form. It takes about two minutes, and then Cash For Stores books your 45-minute evaluation call.

FAQ

Can I sell my eBay account for cash?

eBay's own pages say no, and we buy some eBay accounts anyway, on a signed Asset Purchase Agreement, knowing eBay may restrict the account. We fund Escrow.com before anything moves, and Escrow.com releases the money to you on the transfer call, the moment you hand over access.

What if someone messages me offering to buy my eBay account?

eBay's help page is direct about this: "If someone offers to buy your eBay account, report it to us as soon as possible." eBay wants every offer to buy an account reported. A buyer who wants your login before paying is a scam.

Can a family member just take over my eBay account?

Not without eBay's consent: the User Agreement bars transferring the account, and it bars sharing your login. A relative who only needs to help run the store can get Team access, which you grant by sending an invite from the Team access page in My eBay.

Do I pay tax on the sale?

That depends on where you live and how your business is set up. Talk to your accountant before you sign.
