Amazon Seller Fees Too High? When Selling the Account Makes Sense
Rated 4.9 on Trustpilot. Free offer within 24 hours, paid through Escrow.com.

The Short Answer
If your store still sells but the Amazon fees take too much of every sale, you have two real choices: cut the fees where Amazon lets you, or sell the account and leave with cash. When the cuts are not enough, selling the account is a quick way out, paid through Escrow.com on the transfer call. Cash For Stores buys Amazon seller accounts from their original owners, and we have bought 1,600+ since 2020. No upfront fee, no escrow fee, no transfer fee: the number on the offer is the number that reaches you.
This page is for the seller whose business works but whose margin the fees eat. If you are losing money outright, our guide on closing your FBA account when you are losing money is the better read. Amazon's help pages say an account cannot be transferred by itself, so we buy it as part of the sale of the business it belongs to.
Why are Amazon seller fees so high?
Amazon says it continues to better align its fees to its underlying costs, and in 2026 it raised FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) fees by product size and price band. Its fee schedule lists referral fees, closing fees, FBA fulfillment fees and FBA returns processing fees, each set by the product's fee category, and referral fees vary by category.
Amazon puts its reasoning plainly in its 2026 fee summary: "We continue to better align our fee structure and rates to our underlying costs." The same page notes there was no increase in US Referral and FBA fees in 2025. The exact changes for your products are on Amazon's 2026 US Referral and FBA fee changes summary.
Amazon points to its Fee Explainer for more detail on your own fees, and the full list is on the Selling on Amazon fee schedule. Pull your own numbers from Seller Central before you decide anything.

Can you bring your Amazon FBA fees down?
Sometimes, yes. Amazon's own 2026 fee summary names three levers: updating your product packaging, choosing lower cost inbound shipment options, and keeping inventory levels healthy. You can also pick a fulfillment method per product, FBA or Fulfilled by Merchant, where you ship orders yourself. If those levers still leave the margin too thin, the fees are structural.
Here is the order we would work through it in, if you plan to stay:
- Check the fee category. The fee category of a product sets its referral, closing, FBA fulfillment and FBA returns processing fees at once. Open the Fee Explainer for each of your best sellers and check its category against the referral fee categories on Amazon's fee schedule.
- Look at packaging and inbound shipping. Measure the dimensions and weight of the packed unit against its size tier, small or large standard-size, and pick the lower cost inbound shipment option when you send stock in.
- Keep stock lean. Amazon ties healthy inventory levels to lower fees. Slow stock costs you.
- Compare FBA with shipping yourself. Amazon lets you choose a fulfillment method for each product. Whether shipping yourself is cheaper depends on your own costs.
Keep the store or sell the account
Once you have tried the levers, the question is no longer about fees. It is whether the store is still worth your time, or whether the account is worth more to you as cash.
| Keep the store | Sell the account | |
|---|---|---|
| Fees | You keep paying them, and Amazon can change them again | They stop being your problem at the handover |
| Your time | Listings, restocking, ads and fee checks every month | A two-minute form, a 45-minute call, a transfer call |
| Inventory | Stays at Amazon and keeps costing storage | You keep it, and clear it off the account before the transfer; under about 100 units left is fine |
| Money | Payouts from Amazon, after fees | One purchase price, released by Escrow.com on the transfer call |
| Risk you carry | The account's health, and the next fee change | Escrow.com holds the money before anything moves |
Keeping the store is the right call if the levers above fix your margin.
When does selling the account make sense?
Selling makes sense when you have already tried the fee levers, the store still sells but no longer pays you enough for the work, and you would rather leave with cash than wind it down. The account's age, history, approvals and health carry value. Closing it throws that away; selling it to us turns it into money.
A few signs it may be time:
- You have moved your best products elsewhere, and the Amazon account is now the side of the business you no longer want to run.
- The fees have outgrown what the store pays you for the hours.
- You want out, but not by closing the account and walking away from what it is worth.
The account has to be registered to you as its original owner. An account that is still healthy is an account you can still sell. If you are not sure yet, our guide on when to sell your Amazon seller account goes through the timing.
Can you sell an Amazon account at all? Amazon's help pages say an account cannot be transferred by itself. A sale to us is done as the sale of the business the account belongs to, on a written Asset Purchase Agreement, with the new owner then verified by Amazon in their own name. Our page on whether you can sell your Amazon seller account covers this in full.
How a sale to us runs
A deal usually closes in one to three weeks. An Asset Purchase Agreement (APA) is the written contract that records the sale. Escrow.com is a licensed escrow agent (California DFPI licence 9631867): a neutral party that holds the money until the handover.

Before the call you send us the basics: account age, category approvals, sales history, metrics and any brand assets such as trademarks. What decides the number is the account's history, so we do not give one before the call. Our guide on what your Amazon seller account is worth explains what sets it.
You can log in to Escrow.com and see the money sitting there before any credentials change hands. From the transfer call, it reaches your bank in about 1 business day by US wire, 3 to 5 business days by international wire, or about 3 business days by the free electronic transfer. We cover the Escrow fee either way.
Amazon may check the new owner after the handover, on about half of transfers, and that check can take 30 to 60 days. That wait is the buyer's, not yours. You are paid on the transfer call.

What happens to your inventory if you sell?
You keep all of your inventory, because we are only buying the account itself. Clearing what is left off the account before the transfer is at your own cost, and how you clear it is your call. Plan that before the transfer call is booked.
Your pending Amazon balance stays yours for 30 days. We do not change the bank account on file for 30 days, so Amazon keeps paying your pre-sale earnings to you in that time.
Download your reports and tax forms before you hand over. Tax on the sale is a question for your accountant.
FAQ
Should I switch to Fulfilled by Merchant instead of selling?
Maybe, and you can test it on a few listings first rather than the whole store. If neither method leaves you enough margin, that is the point to weigh a sale; the evaluation call is 45 minutes, and you pay nothing to sell.
Can I sell my account if the store is still profitable?
Yes. We buy Amazon accounts in good standing, registered to their original owner. Every offer is based on three things: the account's current market value, the time it takes us to resell it, and the risk we take on during the transfer.
How much will you pay for my account?
We do not give a number before we have looked at the account. The offer comes on the evaluation call or within 24 hours of it.
Is it better to close or sell my Amazon account?
A sale pays you on the transfer call, with Escrow.com holding the money before anything moves. Our guide on closing an account properly covers the closing route if you still prefer it. To sell, send us the form; it takes about two minutes.
