Inactive Amazon Seller Account: Can You Still Sell It?

The Short Answer

If you stopped selling on Amazon months ago and your seller account now sits inactive with no sales, you can usually still sell it, as long as it is in good standing. A dormant account is not worthless: its age, history, approved categories and Brand Registry carry the value. Cash For Stores buys Amazon seller accounts from their original owners, dormant ones included, 1,600+ of them since 2020.

We hear it on calls: the account has not sold in a year, so the seller assumes it is worth nothing. That is rarely how we see it. The sales stopped. The record did not.

This page is for the seller who has already left, or is about to. If you want the wider picture first, start with can I sell my Amazon seller account.

What makes a dormant Amazon account worth anything?

A dormant account is worth something because of the record it already holds, and none of that record disappears when the sales stop. A buyer is paying for what the account built up while it was active, not for last month's orders. That record is what we look at together on the call, and it sets the offer.

On the evaluation call we open the account together and look at:

  • Age. When the account was opened.
  • History. What it sold and how it performed while it was active.
  • Approved categories and brand approvals. What it can list that a new account cannot without applying.
  • Account health. The metrics Amazon tracks on your orders, such as order defect rate and late shipments.
  • Brand Registry. Whether a trademark is attached.

What sets the number is that history, and the offer comes on the call, after we have seen the account. Our guide on what an Amazon seller account is worth goes through each factor.

Two things decide whether we can buy at all. The account must be registered to you, the original owner. And it cannot be suspended or deactivated for fraud, counterfeit or a related-account ban; an account suspended or deactivated for any other reason we can still look at.

Thinking of selling? Two-minute form, a 45-minute call, your offer within 24 hours.

Inactive, deactivated or closed: which one do you have?

Three different things get called an inactive account. An open account with no sales and closed listings is the one we can look at straight away. An account Amazon has deactivated can still be looked at, unless the reason is fraud, counterfeit or a related-account ban. A closed account is gone: Amazon calls closing permanent.

What to do nowSend the formSend the form and tell us the reason on the noticeNothing; a new owner needs a new account

Amazon's Close your seller account page does not say how long an account can sit without sales before Amazon flags it, or how an account deactivated for inactivity is reactivated. We will not guess at a number Amazon does not publish. Check the notice in your Seller Central account and Amazon's own help pages.

We do not offer reinstatement as a service. If Amazon has deactivated or suspended your account, we can still look at it, unless the reason is fraud, counterfeit or a related-account ban. Our guide on selling a suspended Amazon seller account covers that case in full.

Does an inactive account still cost you money?

It can. Amazon's page says an account kept open on the Professional selling plan with buyable listings is still subject to a monthly subscription fee. The same page says you can downgrade to the Individual selling plan if you do not want that fee. A sale to us takes the account, and its fees, off your hands.

The Professional selling plan is Amazon's monthly subscription plan; the Individual plan charges per sale instead. From Amazon's page, word for word:

"If you keep any accounts open with a Professional selling plan and have buyable listings, you will still be subject to a monthly subscription fee."

Amazon also points to a middle route. To remove all your listings and keep the account active for future use, its page sends you to "Stop selling a product".

What happens to stranded FBA stock, storage fees or pending disbursements while an account sits idle is not covered on the Close your seller account page. Check those in Seller Central. On our side, two things are simple: you keep your inventory, and any marketplace charge that lands on your card after the sale is ours, paid back by gift card, Zelle or bank transfer, whichever you prefer.

Should you close an inactive Amazon seller account instead?

You can, but closing throws away the one thing the account still has. Amazon will not close an account within 90 days of its last sale, the balance must be zero, and open A-to-z Guarantee claims must be settled. Once closed, you lose access to order history, returns and buyer messages. Get an offer before you close: a closed account cannot be sold.

Amazon's rule, word for word: "Accounts cannot be closed within 90 days of your last sale. This guarantees that the A-to-z Guarantee claim period is honored."

If you are going to sell, do not close the account first. A closed account has nothing left to sell.

If you still want to close, here is how Amazon describes it. Go to Settings, click Account Info, then Close Account in the Account Management section, fill in the required fields and send the request. Amazon then emails you, either to confirm the closure or to say why the account cannot be closed yet. Each regional account (North America, Europe, Japan, Australia) is closed separately. If you have a North America Unified Account, closing the US account also closes Canada, Mexico and Brazil.

How does a sale of a dormant account work?

You fill in a two-minute form, we look at the account with you on a 45-minute evaluation call, and the offer comes on the call or within 24 hours. You sign an Asset Purchase Agreement, we fund Escrow.com, and Escrow.com releases the money to you on the transfer call, the moment you hand over access.

Escrow.com is licensed by the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation, licence 9631867.

Selling a dormant account, from form to paid. The form - About two minutes, before we ever speak.; The evaluation call - 45 minutes on a screen share. We open the account together.; Your offer - On the call, or within 24 hours.; Agreement and escrow - You sign the APA. We fund Escrow.com before anything moves.; The transfer call - Booked within 10 business days of escrow being funded.; You are paid - Escrow.com releases the funds on that call, at the handover.

From the transfer call, the money reaches your bank in about 1 business day by US wire, 3 to 5 business days by international wire, or about 3 business days by the free electronic transfer. We cover the Escrow fee either way.

Amazon's own check on the new owner can come later, on about half of transfers. That is the buyer's wait, not yours. You are paid on the transfer call.

FAQ

Can I sell a dormant Amazon seller account that has not sold in years?

Often, yes, and you need very little ready for the call. Bring the account's age, a rough total of its sales over its life, any suspensions, warnings or open issues, and the categories and brands it can sell in. We do not need a login, a password, bank details or tax documents to value it.

Should I cancel the Professional plan while I wait to sell?

Amazon lets you downgrade to the Individual plan if you do not want the monthly fee. Before you change anything on the account, tell us on the call, so we can look at it as it stands.

What happens to my leftover inventory?

It stays yours. We buy only the account, so you clear your stock off it before the transfer, at your own cost. Under about 100 units left is fine.

Do I pay tax on the sale?

That depends on where you live and how your business is set up. Talk to your accountant before you sign.

I want to buy a dormant account, not sell one. Is that you?

No, Cash For Stores only buys. To buy an aged account, go to our sister brand, Seller Accounts (selleraccounts.com).
